With reference to pupils, I wish to congratulate Twm Aled on his selection for the ‘Yale Young Global Scholars’ programme in July, 2018.  Twm, a Year 11 student, will participate in an intense, rigorous and highly enriching programme of academic study with fellow pupils from around the world on Yale University’s campus, New Haven, USA this summer.

I wish also to congratulate Lewis Davies, a year 13 pupil, who won a gold medal representing the GB ice hockey team in Estonia over the Easter break.  I wish also to extend best wishes to the pupils competing in the Urdd Eisteddfod in Builth Wells in Whitsun 2018 – the school was victorious in 15 competitions in the county Eisteddfod therefore there should be a very healthy school representation during the Eisteddfod week.

With reference to staffing, I wish to thank Miss Leah Rhys for the two terms she spent teaching religious education and history and I wish to extend my congratulations to Ms Gillian Fisher, a member of the Administration Team on her appointment to the Department of Work and Pensions from mid-May 2018.

The planning for the school’s extension continues and meetings have been arranged with the School Council, SMT, Governing Body and staff by the end of July in order to collate their wishes and requests for the new build.  The work is expected to commence in April 2019 and open to pupils and staff in September 2021.  The school population as a 3-19 school continues to increase with 1121 presently on our role with a new Year 7 of 187 pupils due to commence in September 2018.

Welcome back to a new academic year and new term at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg.  It is a pleasure to welcome the 164 new Year 7 pupils and the 71 pupils that have returned to their AS studies in Year 12. The school is evolving quickly and 11 new staff have commenced with us in September – 2 teaching staff in the primary, 9 in the secondary and two teaching assistants.  Two members of staff married over the summer holidays – Mrs Astrid Price and Mrs Jenna Martin-Williams.

This year is a particularly significant year as a 3-19 school.  As Year 6 commenced in September we now have a class in each national curriculum year thus increasing the school population to 1,116.

Year 10 pupils have returned to a wider curriculum with three additional courses on offer – Construction, Employability Skills and Sociology offered at GCSE or BTEC.  The academic year has already commenced with pace and we have already conducted transition days, Welsh Baccalaureate days, a whole school cross country inter-house competition, a Year 9 residential trip to Storey Arms, a residential trip for Year 12 pupils, a full week of ‘The enjoyment of reading’ in the primary school and rehearsals have already commenced for the production of ‘We Will Rock You’ which will be performed between December 19th and 21st 2017.
